For two consecutive weekends the Owls would don the colours of ANU & Norths as part of the clubs 80th Anniversary celebrations.
The first to be worn was the myrtle green of Norths as the Owls took on fellow foundation club Easts at North Oval. With plenty of past players in the stands plus a jumper presentation by Wallaby and Norths Player Brad Girvan, 1st Grade took the field and put on a show, running away with a comprehensive and important 41-17 bonus point win. The whole club celebrated long and hard that night with over 300 people attending the clubs 80th Anniversary Dinner.
Next the Owls took on ANU’s biggest rivals Royals. The blue and white strips almost clashed with the Royal blue of Royals, but it had been that way for many years. The match was a nail bitter, going down to the wire as the Owls clawed their way back into the game against the defending premiers. With minutes remaining, the Owls marched their way up the field before fly half Tom Gilmore calmly sat in the pocket and kicked a field goal to take the lead 26-25. Each break in play the Owls crowd was willing the referee to blow full time, and when he finally did the crowd erupted.
It is unlikely that the club will get another opportunity to play in Norths and ANU jersey for some time, and to win both fixtures was a special moment for the club and all involved.
